Discouragement -- unabridged

To be deprived of courage or confidence

Causes of discouragement:
Abounding wickedness discourages the righteous. (Psalms 73)
Psalm 119:53, Psalm 6:3-9; Psalm 7:1

The difficulties of the way traveled sometimes leads to discouragement.
Numbers 21:4, Matthew 7:13-14
Delayed fulfillment of desires can bring about discouragement.
Proverbs 13:12, Psalm 63:5
Being overwhelmed by the scorn of our enemies can discourage us.
Psalm 57; Psalm 69:3-4;Psalm 6:7
A lack of sensing the Lord’s presence can bring discouragement.
I Samuel 28 King Saul when lacking a sense of the Lord’s presence, sinned and sought answers from the Witch of Endor.
Psalm 42:1-6
Feeling one is alone in his service to God brings on discouragement.
Psalm 12:1 “HELP, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth for the faithful fail from among the children of men.”
I Kings 19:4 Elijah believed he was the only one who had not bowed the knee to Baal. God showed him that he was not alone. We cannot trust our feelings.
Triumph over discouragement:
The discouraged can be comforted by the Holy Spirit.
John 14:15-18 Obedience and the comfort of His presence go hand in hand.
Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."
Recognize that the path traveled “leadeth to life”. (Matthew 7:14)
John 10:10b “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
Psalm 16:11 “At thy right hand there are pleasures for ever more.“
Living a life honoring to God does not earn us eternal life, but we are promised abundant living.
Refocus on what God Word says regarding “the way”.
Psalm 37:23-24 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighted in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord uphold him with his hand.”
Focusing on the attributes of God (found in His name) will deliver us from discouragement Isaiah50:10 "Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God."

By seeking to meet the needs of others our discouragement can be helped.
